Rev. Walter Lewis Howell, 93, died and went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 18, 2018. Born June 23, 1924, he was the youngest child of Percy C. Howell and Pearl Gillis Howell. Four siblings preceded him in death; Edna Earl English, James E. Howell, Percy C. Howell, Jr., and Daniel A. Howell.
He grew up in Raeford, NC with a passionate love for baseball. He graduated from Hoke County High School and then awaited the military draft for World War II. He was an Armorer on P. 38’s and P. 51’s at Wattisham Air Base near Ipswitch, England and was discharged on December 6, 1945.
After attending the Printing School in Nashville, TN, he worked several years at the Bluefield Daily Telegraph in Bluefield, West Virginia. In 1952 Walter married the love of his life, Laura Louise White of Cliffield, VA. Louise preceded him in death on August 31, 2013 after 61 years of marriage.
Later with Louise’s encouragement, Walter entered the ministry, attended Bluefield College, Wake Forest College, and Southeastern Seminary. He ministered in the pastorate, VA Hospital, and Providence Hospital.
He is survived by his son Jonathan V. (Jennifer); granddaughter Susannah Laurel; along with nephews, cousins, nieces, and Louise’s extended family.
Funeral services for The Rev. Walter L. Howell will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, June 21, 2018, at St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Rd., Columbia, SC, 29210. The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 12, noon. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family.
