Gilbert-Funeral services for Melvin B. Hayes, 88, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2018 at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church with Pastor Faye Stephens and Pastor Jeff Kersey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Mt. Horeb UMC, 1205 Old Cherokee Rd., Lexington, SC 29072.
Mr. Hayes passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, March 6, 2018. He was born in Gilbert, SC and was the son of the late Brooks and Esther Ella Price Hayes. He was a member of Mt. Horeb UMC, and was a kind and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family. A hard worker, he was known as the "family rock" who spoke few words but his actions with his family and community were a testament to his strong faith and knowledge. He was a teacher to many and respected by all who knew him. His service as a Korean War Veteran taught him the importance of survival and the strength and patience of a humble man.
Surviving are his daughters, Rene Littell (Brian), of Lexington, Toni Bass (Robby), of Gilbert, and Abby Fitts of Gilbert; grandchildren, Robert and Morgan Littell, Hunter and Rachel Bass, Kayla Smith (J.D.) Meagan, Brooks and Clayton Fitts, great grandchildren, Chelsea and Patrick "Pat" Smith and Ariella "Ari" Kelly; brother, Norris Hayes and sister, Bernice Simpson (Bob). He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Leaphart Hayes; son-in-law, Walton "Skip" Fitts; brother, Boyd and sisters, Dorene and Lucille.
