Joe Claude Whittle, entrepreneur extraordinaire, passed away at his home on August 4, 2018 in Batesburg-Leesville, SC at the age of 72. Mr. Whittle began his career in computer programming in 1964 while attending the University of Oklahoma. He graduated with a degree in mathematics and statistical analysis. After graduation, he and his new bride, Susan Yeager Whittle, began married life in Seattle, Washington. Joe and Susan developed expertise in the theory of credits and debits which would be the basis of their business life for the next 30 years.
After living and working in both Seattle and Los Angeles as young professionals and being part of the late 60’s Hippie scene,) they started a business and family in Seattle. Joe was responsible for the teaching and mentoring of 6 – 7 young men who now are well established businessmen in the field of computer technology and systems analysis. In 1986, Joe and Susan moved the company and themselves to Hockessin, DE. In 2010, they moved to Batesburg-Leesville and developed Whittle Farms on the property originally owned by Joe’s great grandfather, Minnick Quincy Whittle. Joe was so proud of the work being done with the youth group, Dream Catchers, and was always a great supporter and benefactor. Instead of flowers, he would have liked for donations to be made to Dream Catchers, c/o Batesburg -Leesville Chamber of Commerce, P O Box 2178, Leesville, SC 29070.
Joe leaves a wife of 51 years, Susan Whittle, son, Jay Whittle, daughter-in -law, Beth Whittle and four beautiful granddaughters, Caitlin, Ashley, Jayme, and Brooklyn. In addition, he leaves a sister, Sally Whittle Stein, brother-in-law Louis Stein, sister-in-law, Carolyn DeLaFleur, brother-in-law Douglas Yeager and his wife Kay, and a “favorite” cousin, Nathan Shealy. There are many nephews who will remember their special “Uncle Joe.”
