West Columbia- Services for J. Ryan Barber, Sr., 83, of West Columbia, will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Burial will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens, 3111 Delree St., West Columbia, SC. The family will be receiving friends at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Friday, July 5, 2019. Serving as Pallbearers: Corey Mungo, Eric Barber, Stephen Howerton, Stacy Barber, Joshua Patterson, Lee Gleaton, Brennen Barber, and Gene Wilson. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers: BJ Price, Anthony Price, Pat Barber, John Rondeau, Bryan Price, and Jerald Drafts. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 7 Richland Medical Park, Columbia, SC, 29203.
Mr. Barber passed away Sunday, June 30, 2019. Born in Calhoun County on September 17, 1935, he was a son of the late James W. and Flossie Shumaker Barber.
He served in law enforcement for Orangeburg Police Department, Forest Acres Police Department, and Springdale Police Department as an officer and then as Chief of Police in Springdale. After leaving law enforcement, Mr. Barber continued serving his community driving a school bus for Lexington School District Two and as a parking lot attendant at White Knoll High School in Lexington School District One where he was affectionately known as “Golfy”, until he retired in 2008.
Surviving are his children Ryan Jr.(Piper) Barber; James “Jimmy” (Barbara) Barber; Donna (Bryan) Price; Elaine (John) Rondeau; Margaret (Jerald) Drafts; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Barber was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Frankie P. (Sissy); five brothers; and five sisters.
