George W. Roof
On Wednesday, George W Roof, 96, of Lexington was taken home. He was born on August 22, 1922 to Luther Bearden and Alberta Roof.
As a poor country boy, George always found time for service to his family, community and country. At the advent of WWII, he joined the US Army Air Force and served as a B-24 flight mechanic in the Pacific. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and 5 Air Medals. Upon his return he married Lo Re Waits and started a family.
When the state sold its one room schools, he worked with the county agents to create the Round Hill Community Center. He served as its president on 3 occasions.
Being active in his church, he served on multiple councils and served as a Deacon. He instituted the Pisgah Endowment Program and served on the board for 21 years.
When there was a call for a Scout Master, George agreed only while his son was eligible. That tour lasted 37 years. He earned top scout honors of the Silver Beaver, The Lamb Award from the National Lutheran Council on Scouting, and as a Vigil with the Order of the Arrow. He was elected to the Centennial Hall of Leadership for the Indian Waters Council.
Aside from his parents, George is predeceased by his wife of 62 years and brothers Luther B. Jr. and Mayhugh. He is survived by son, Steven, of Delaware; daughter, Angela (James), brothers, Rev. Hilton (Faye), and Milton (Doris), all of Lexington. He has 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Celebration of life and interment will be held at Pisgah Lutheran Church in Lexington where he was the oldest active member in the congregation. A viewing at the church will begin at 2PM with full military honors at 4PM.
Special thanks to Mr Hugh Caldwell whose close friendship was always a highlight.
Memorials can be made to Pisgah Lutheran Church.
