Donald Havird Obituary

Services for Donald "Don" M. Havird, 79, will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at West Creek Baptist Church.  Burial will follow at Ridge Crest Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Historic B-L Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made West Creek Baptist Church, 248 Church Rd. B-L SC 29006 or to the Saluda Co. Cattlemen's Assoc. c/o Travis Mitchell, P.O. Box 218, Saluda, SC 29138.

Mr. Havird passed away Thursday, September 13, 2018.  Born in Ridge Spring, he was a son of the late Hadell Gay and Lillie Mae Boatwright Havird.  Mr. Havird was a member of West Creek Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was known as the "bell ringer."  Mr. Havird was employed with Palmetto Propane/Havird Oil for 14 years before he began farming full time.  As the owner/operator of Shady Hill Farm he had an extensive farming operation specializing in row crops, beef cattle, and peaches.  He was proud to have lived and farmed on the "home place" and was SC Cattleman of the Year in 1999. He was a founding member of the Saluda County Cattlemen's Association and was selected as Cattleman of the Year in 1996.  Mr. Havird was a Farm Bureau Director, was the Saluda Soil and Water Conservation District Cooperator of the year in 2002, and served on the Board of Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service (Farm Service Agent) for 25 years.

Surviving are a son, Marty (Retta) Havird of Ridge Spring; daughter, Sheila (Mickey) Matthews of Ridge Spring; brother, Frank Havird of Lexington; sister, Phyllis Bedenbaugh of Lexington; grandchildren, Bethany Matthews, Haley Havird, Braxton Matthews, and Morgan Havird. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Ann T. Havird, brothers, David, Bobby, and Paul Havird, sisters, Martha Havird, Dorothy Fox, and Sally Ann Grice.

He was a hardworking and caring Father, a devoted Papa, a mentor and teacher to many, and a friend to all.
