Bert Smith III, 59, of West Columbia, died Wednesday, February 6, 2019. Bert was a retired Captain for the City of Columbia Fire Department, avid motorcyclist, and die-hard Clemson Tiger fan Born January 16, 1960, he was the son of Gail Player and the late Joel B Player, Jr.
He attended Gilbert High School for several years before attending and graduating from Airport High School. He drove a bus throughout his high school years. He joined the City of Columbia Fire Department shortly thereafter, and retired at the rank of Captain (Ladder 13) after 25 years of service. Bert was an avid motorcyclist and Harley rider, attending many bike rallies and poker runs throughout the years. He was also a die-hard Clemson fan. He was also a generous man, giving of his time and talents to those that may have been in need.
He is survived by his mother, Gail Player; daughter, Launa Smith Rabon (David); Bert Brunson Smith (Alyssa); five grandchildren, Whitney Way, Abbegail Rich, Lane Smith, Ava Smith and Justin Rabon; brother, Joel Lawton Player (Ami); niece, Lauren Amick (Stephen), nephew, Joel T. Player (Jordan), and special friend Bobby Jean Pate.
Visitation will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 2 to 4pm at Barr-Price Funeral Home, in Lexington. Funeral Services will be on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 2pm at Barr-Price Funeral Home with the burial to follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia
