Mila Jean McCubbin Hurley

March 4, 1940 ~ January 25, 2022 (age 81)

Obituary

Mila Hurley, 81, stepped into heaven on January 25, 2022 with family and friends by her side.

Mila will be remembered for her witty sense of humor, “no filter, tell it like it is” comments and her deep love for her family.  She loved to laugh and her laughter was contagious.  Mila will be deeply missed by her family and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Born on March 4, 1940, in Charleston, West Virginia, she was the youngest daughter of the late Pearlie Faye and Rev. C.B. McCubbin. She married her late husband, Barry Hurley in 1958, and enjoyed 51 years by his side prior to his death in 2009.

She was the mother of three children, Donny (Cindy) Hurley of Lexington, SC; Martha (Alan) Thomley of Charlotte, NC; and Roy (Elizabeth) Hurley of Marshall, NC; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Rodger McCubbin of Kenna, West Virigina. Her greatest joy came from watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren become adults and have children of their own. Family meant everything to her.

Mila was predeceased by her husband, parents, and four siblings.

We all see a dash between her date of birth and the date of her death, but Mila filled her dash with so much life.  She had a huge heart for others, and rarely met a stranger.  There was an abundance of “children” that she and Barry opened their home to over the years.  Grandchildren, great-grands, nieces, nephews, and friends were all the recipients of the love and hospitality that exuded from Mila and Barry.  They treated everyone as family and Mila was always ready to share a home cooked meal, or one of “Granny’s Famous Chocolate Cakes” with whomever darkened her doorstep.

Mila also owned a jewelry store in Lexington, SC known as “Mila’s Fine Jewelry.” Jewelry was her true lifelong passion and even after the store closed "sparkle and bobbles" were always present when she was around. She was a passionate “horse-woman” in her early teen years and carried that love of horses throughout her life. She was an excellent seamstress, and later in life helped her daughter start her interior design business, making beautiful window treatments and bedding for clients lucky enough to receive her talent.  Christmas was her absolute favorite time of year, and we are thankful that she was able to enjoy one last Christmas with her family.

Special thanks go to the many participants of her nursing care throughout her Alzheimer’s journey, especially her beloved Denise “Sissy” Brown, and Hospice Palliative Care Charlotte.

A celebration of life will be held on 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Barr-Price Funeral Home in Lexington, SC. Burial will follow at Woodridge Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest by her beloved husband. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice Palliative Care Charlotte, or The Ivey Memory Wellness Day Center (theivey.com), Charlotte.
